Recovering from a car accident in Mexico in 1944, Anna Seghers stumbles into the desert, where, hallucinating, she is transported back to a boat excursion on the Rhine just after the first world war. On this glorious day, she and her school friends and teacher play and sing, unaware of the treachery and darkness that await them in the second war to come.
